Randy Leffingwell has a passion for Porsche - serves as a main reason why this book is not just another account regurgitated from the history of one of the world of the most famous brands. Porsche: A history of Excellence is an overview of past of the automobile manufacturer, from 1938 to our days, said within a 348-page coffee table book.
Research with the tenacity of someone who appreciates and that includes the brand truly, Portal did much of his investigation in Germany, working by hand with Dieter Landenberger (Director of the archives of Porsche) for this fully authorized book. The author conducted more than 60 interviews to answer questions such as: why Porsche you feel it necessary to enter the SUV market? Have some program funding Porsche 917 come from Volkswagen race Marketing? What were the design and engineering challenges to the creation of "two cars with a single face", the Boxster and the 996, at the same time?
The book is loaded with beautiful images and interesting - color photos occupy more space than the text on most pages. Portal, about half the images in the book came from archives of Porsche, which have been published in this book for the first time. The balance was shot by the author himself, a remarkable photographer of international renown, United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria, and Italy.
While this is a chronological reading interesting, with lots of eye candy to keep the attention of the reader, noted us that the book abruptly ends his lesson in history to the year 2008. Unfortunately, there is no mention of current technology such as the "Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe" (PDK), direct injection or the Porsche 918 Spyder (although a picture of the supercar oddly gives coverage). Nevertheless, it is not a deal breaker as the balance of the more factual content for the minor flaw.
Before you rush to put a copy on your family room table, we need to warn that the book is not completely new - explaining the cutoff date. Portal reveals that most of the copy was published as Porsche 60 years, a hardcover of six books, August 2008. Although this book received excellent reviews, he went out of print after a run (new copies of the original text, if you can find, sell more than $150). With the popularity of a German language edition, the Publisher chose to re-release of this updated and revised version called Porsche: A History of Excellence. Printed as a soft three books cover, the book has a list price of $30.00 (it is $21.90 now on Amazon). It is a literary market, if you are a fan of European sports cars.
