When VW announced that it had acquired a 19.9% stake in Suzuki motors, it was quite literary stir in the market. Fresh after the redemption of Porsche, everyone should take slow VW. However, in its goal to become the automotive company number 1 in the world, VW did not leave any unexplored Pierre.
However, we have seen hardly any magic of the JV. Earlier, rumors have been buzzing that VW will review the Suzuki A-Star and will make its own entry-level hatchback. However, as we reported earlier, these plans have been scraped.
Later, the Maruti Suzuki SX4 was launched with a Fiat Multijet. Then the news arrived, Maruti Suzuki will be deployed the same Fiat Multijet Diesel for the 2011 Swift and Swift Dzire. Clearly, VW TDi engines proved to be too expensive to procure or had higher cost of maintenance. In addition, at the meeting of high level, the patterns of the two companies also discussed the possibility of Fiat subsidiary Magneti Marelli providing Suzuki in India with a system automated manual transmission.
The House, in Italy, Suzuki has proposed to build the next generation Sedici (rebadged SX4crossover) for Fiat in Italy. There are also plans to make a small SUV to Chrysler (now owned by Fiat) in a similar manner.
For the moment nothing impressive has come of the VW-Suzuki JV. It seems really as if Fiat would have been the right partner for Suzuki instead of VW. Tata-Fiat partnership has been wrong in India for some time now. What is the two companies (Fiat and Suzuki) chose the wrong partners?
